Photojournalism Ethics

I believe photojournalists ethics should be situational because there are times when you may need to emphasize something with slight lighting changes or crop something that's just taking up room in a photo.
A photo doesn't really capture the truth. Sounds that were happening at the time of the photo cannot be captured. Sometimes it looks different to the actual human eye, than can be captured in a photograph. And actions that show feelings can be captured but actual feelings cannot be captured either, so I don't believe that a photo ever really captures the truth.
Decisions that I have had to make to edit photos are just lighting and cropping. When we did the "edit shoot" assignment we had to change the sizes of photos and make sure the levels were all good in the photo.
It is important that news organizations have clearly defined standards because if they didn't, they might lose their credibility. People might think that they could just lie whenever they wanted or fake photos all the time. I think it's really more for their audience than for the actual photographers.

Dove Evolution of Beauty

changes made to the model's face:
  • bigger lips
  • longer neck
  • lower eyes
  • bigger eyes/ raising eyebrows
  • thinner neck/ lower shoulders
  • fuller hair
  • thinner face
  • enhanced cheekbones

In fashion photography I believe it's ok to change someone's appearance because it is trying to sell a product not a person. It would be worse if someone's face was changed like this that was just in a picture in a newspaper or something and not an ad. I think different changes are ok based on different situations. In fashion photography I believe all the changes they made are ok, but in photojournalism, I believe there should only be cropping, brightness, etc. Photojournalism is supposed to show the truth and tell a story, whereas fashion photography is trying to show "beautiful" people to sell a product. The ethics are effected because they are trying to portray completely different things.

Ethics/Photo Manipulation

1:

2:

Unethical

This photo us unethical because Newsweek is basically saying that this woman's teeth aren't good enough to be in their magazine, so they fixed them. It's just rude. And those aren't her real teeth so they're basically lying to everyone.

Not as unethical

I don't find this photo unethical because the pyramids are still the same, pyramids, they're just a little closer together. It wouldn't have looked as good if you could only see half of each pyramid because they didn't fit on the cover. National Geographic was doing their readers a favor by making the cover picture more interesting.

Bob Rosato

focal length of lens: 300 mm
shutter speed: 1/800
aperture: 2.8
The effect of shooting with this fast shutter speed let Rosato sharply capture the moment without any blurring. The aperture setting gave this picture more focus on the players and not what's in the background because a large aperture creates a small depth of field. Rosato was standing behind the line of scrimmage to shoot this.

911 Composition

Simplicity

There are no distracting things around the man, the only light is on his face and the rest of the picture is dark, which makes the photo simple and gives it a dark feel.

Lines

The bright, bold, red lines give make this photo feel strong and create good lines pointing to the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty's arm also creates a line pointing to the flag.

Framing

The destroyed building creates interesting framing to the smoking building in the background.

Contest Preview

ATPI Beg Color Student Life/ Beg Color Open
I find this photo powerful because you can tell that the band is having a great time on stage and the audience is cheering for them so I just feel like it's an awesome moment for that band. I like how the frame is filled with interesting things such as people's cheering hands and the band on stage. I like how the lights are different colors, and even though the picture is kindof dark, you can still see what everything is and the lights add a nice touch.

Academics Preview #1

"The Story"
I think the girls in this photo had their car break down in the middle of nowhere and they're trynig to figure out what's wrong with the engine.

"Action and Emotion"
The action in the photo is the super crazy fire that the guy is blowing and the emotion is the guy's friend smiling which shows that he thinks it's cool.

"Filling the frame"

This frame is specifically filled with a girl playing her trumpet and even though main focus are the valves, the girl is seen in the top right corner and her hand is shown in the left side of the photo.

Negative Critique

1. The only problem I had with my negatives was that there were water spots on a couple of them, which means that the water from the water bath didn't completely come off which caused some of the water to dry on the negatives.

2. My favorite two pictures were negatives number 3 and 6. My exposure is good in both pictures, and I both pictures have the frame filled. In negative 3, my focus is off a little bit, more focused on one guy in the back instead of the main person. In negative 6, my focus is perfect on Carolina.

pinhole critique

I like this one.
There isn't a person or action in this photo. I think everything's in focus. There is no warping.
I don't like this one.
There aren't any people in this photo. Everything's pretty much in focus here, but since the grass is closer it looks more in focus. I don't think the image is warped at all.

photo critiques

This photo has a lot of just dead space behind him, so the frame wasn't filled up. He also wasn't doing anything special at the time that was really important to capture.
I think this is a really good photo because whoever took it captured a good moment in which he was using his hands. It's close enough to where there isn't too much dead space, however, I don't like all the distracting things in the background.
